Sonali the most amazing sister ever!

Sunil and I couldn't have gotten through "Operation Delta" without the support of his family. His Mom and Dad came out and stayed 5 days and his sister came out and stayed 9. Sonali is in Med school and a newlywed in Minnesota. Her hubby, Nathan Meyer, was nice enough to lend her to us for the week. Although I heard that he reverted back to his bachelor days of eating a whole pack of Nathan's Hot Dogs for dinner. I was afraid when she offered to stay that there would be nothing for her to do, how wrong I was! She cooked and cleaned and took care of Sunil when I went back to work. She was truly a God send. I was begging her to stay longer! :)
With that in mind I also want to thank Sunil's Parents for having Sonali order fresh direct "ready made" catered food for us. Since Sonali left we've been enjoying leftover mashed potatoes, thai chicken and brown rice, matzo ball soup, and many other delicious "fud" (that is food said with an Indian Accent:)

This is Sonali and Marlon.

Sunil had to have a spinal MRI today because he has a toe on his right foot that feels REALLY cold. The docs are too concerned but since he had a reaction to the chemicals from the surgery that made the muscles in his spine swell up, they wanted to make sure everything looked good.

That's about it, Sunil and I see the surgeon tomorrow at noon, so we will report back after that.

Blessings

The cats that have invaded our life

I know many of you might not be a cat person, and for 27 years of my life I agreed with you. Sunil brought a cat into the relationship that was pretty stinkin' cool, his name was Ellington. He was a large 17 pound tabby that loved to do happy feet into long hair. He got sick when he was 8 years old, right after we moved to NYC again. It left a void in my life enough to where I needed to adopt another cat. Only this time I adopted a brother and sister duo named Cody and Anna. Anna is so smart she is skittish and alway suspicious, I liken her to "Stewie from the Family Guy" Cody "Fats" Malone is her brother who is the complete polar opposite of Anna.

I just wanted to share some dumb pics of them. This is Anna in the fruit basket. Which is king of ironic since we do call her "Anna Banana."

This is Anna in the cabinet. She pretty much puts herself in any small cubby-like space she can find.

This is Cody gettin' all up in my business. I have the heating pad on my neck, I think he's trying to get in on the action.

So this blog is just a bunch of silly fluff, but I thought I would show off the lighter side of our life since the surgery is OVER! :)

Sunil's Scar

I wanted to share this because it is super cool. If you are queasy you might not like this. Sunil is doing well. He's getting mad that he hurts still. Considering he had two surgeries last week, it's pretty amazing he is doing as well as he is.

We went to Marlon's performance yesterday at school. It was very cute! Of course the batteries on our camera went dead so I have nothing but a blurry cell phone pic. Not worth sharing.

Anyway, I leave you with this amazing looking head!

On our way to the hospital

Sonali and I decided to take public transportation instead of a cab. Sonali's tea leaked all over the train floor and the bus is sticky hot! But we saved money! Sunil will hopefully be coming home today. (Uncle Frankie keeps him awake with his snoring)

Sunil's eatin soup!

Sunil is once again stuck with a crazy room mate only this time its is roommate ';Uncle Frankie's'; crazy family that is loud and obnoxious and italian brooklyn. We've only had to tell them to be quiet once so far. Sunil's eatin soup, watchin dave chappele.

He is OK!

He came out of surgery yesterday way better than the first time. He was talking and crabby which means he is still himself!

There seems to be growth further back in his brain, about a cm from the old spot, which means the tumor moved to a new spot. She had to open up the scar back more in order to reach it. It worked, she got it out and he is doing well.

Because the tumor seemed to have moved the docs are recommending radiation in about 2 weeks. Which isn't the best news.

Thank you all for your prayers!

Surgery again!

Dr Tabar just called me and said the MRI they took last night indiciated the tumor is still in there. She recommends she go in again and get it. It's smaller than a walnut and could be just scar tissue, but she wants to make sure she gets it. So Sunil is going to have another operation this evening.

If you want to stop by and say hello you'll have to do it before 4 or 5 as that is when the doctor said the surgery will probably happen.

This doesn't happen very often, so I'm not sure the complications. We are heading down now to figure it out.

7th floor

Sunil is now in a room on the 7th floor. He is in pain but got up and walked yesterday. I tried to feed him some jello, gross, but he didn't like it. It seems the nurses finally got a drug cocktail that allowed him to sleep relatively pain free. A combination of pain pills and muscle relaxers. I have to say I was a bit jelous as I watched him take it! Kidding of course.

I slept in today by accident. It seems the alarm only goes off when you turn it on! who knew! :)

Thanks again for tuning in to Sunil's recovery. Today his Mom, Dad, Sister, and I are going out to dinner with Marlon. Poppimom(grandma) is soooooo excited. I'll take pics and post them tomorrow.

Sore Neck

Good Morning family and friends. Sunil is in recovery still, he is going to be moved to the Neuro floor as soon as a bed opens up. He was having trouble with his neck and muscles around his shoulders cramping up and being tight. The doctor said it was from the positiioning during the procedure. He was in pain and uncomfortable but the docs are not too worried, they are convinced it should be better today. I think I'm having sympathy pains because I woke up with a stiff neck too!

Sonali and I are off to the hospital soon. I won't be able to update this until the evening. Sunil may be up for visitors on Friday if anyone wants to pop by. Just text me or him and we can see.

Thank you all for your prayers. The recovery is the hardest part so it would be great to keep the prayers going.

Love you all
Mandi

SUNIL IS FINE! He is out of surgery and in recovery. He was super cold when he woke up so they blew some hot air on him and he's fine :)

This Side

"Operation Delta" This is Sunil this morning making sure they knew what side to operate on. The doctors and nurses got a chuckle from that.

Ozomatli the night before Operation Delta

Last night after Sunil's MRI/Brain mapping we went to Webster Hall and saw Ozomatli. Great band!

'Operation Delta'

Well, it has begun. We had to be at the hospital at 5:45AM! yicks. we made it but not before we wrote where to cut open. BTW I'm blogging from my cell phone, please excuse typing errors.

he went into surgery at 8:40 and is still there. Doctor Tabar, the surgeon, is very good and takes her time. She is just as ready as we are to have 'Operation Delta' be the last one.

Money Tree

I though I would share with you the amazing money tree story. Last year for my 30Th Birthday my best childhood friend Jamie sent me a money tree. I was very happy as that would definitely mean that Sunil and I would have good fortune this year as the legend goes...:)

"The road to prosperity is paved with hard work and determination and a money tree, according to Feng Shui masters, who believe in the plant's power to deliver wealth and good fortune. Legend has it that the discovery of this resilient plant turned a poor Taiwanese farmer into a wealthy entrepreneur. Ever since, this plant with the cheerful umbrellas of leaves has been known in Asian cultures as the "money tree."

Well, the poor Taiwanese farmer must not have had Cody and Anna as pets. Because if he did, then his "Money Tree" would look like this!

Marlon and Sunil watered our poor little money tree before we brought Marlon home on Saturday. What we neglected to do is put the little tree back up on the top shelf so the cats wouldn't eat it...It seems our cats absolutely enjoy eating anything green. And this little money tree had no defenses.

The irony and humor of this little event makes both Sunil and I shrug and say his favorite phrase when things go wrong..."Typical"

With that, I would like to leave you with a picture of my co-workers' tree. This tree must be great fortune for Walter because it is beautiful!

Easter Time

I'm trying to reflect on all the amazing things that God has done in my life. Easter is the time to remember that Jesus came to this earth and died so that we can have ever lasting life. It's also the time for Easter candy and Easter Bunnies and Easter Eggs! Very tasty! I've chosen to take this holiday season and reflect on all the things I'm thankful for. God has been very good to me. I have a great husband, an amazing family, and a nice apartment. So here is a small bit of my thankful list...

Thank you Jesus for my Husband

Thank you Jesus for my Step-Daughter

This is how Marlon was watching a movie last night. Didn't look to comfy to me but she assured me that it was a great way to watch a movie on our couch. Not sure I'd fit like that, but maybe I'll try it.

Thank you Jesus for my Cody "Fats" Malone.

Thank you Jesus for my Mom and Sis and Doug(Step-Dad)
They sent us Easter buckets for Easter complete with chocolate eggs and a chocolate Bunny! YES!!!

Thank you for my friends!

Francie's Birthday

OK, these aren't my friends, but the Ninja Turtles are cool.

Francie and I

Of Course there are many more people I can't find pics for, but just know if you are my friend, I'm thankful for you!!!!

Thank you God for our apartment

This is Sunil and I on our roofdeck. It was nice out a few weekends ago so we had tea and snacks outside!!

Thank you Jesus for my Indian Family!
There are lots more, but I can't find pics. I'll post them when I get some!

My Husband, the most amazing fighter against a stubborn bastard tumor!

Some of you know, some don't, that my husband has been battling a brain tumor for 7 years. Very successfully I might add. He has had three brain surgeries and 9 months of chemo over the last 7 years. It seems the tumor is as stubborn as my husband and continues to grow. I just wanted to let you know that we just found out that it is back. Before anyone gasps in dismay let me first tell you that it is in the right frontal lobe of his brain, which as far as brain tumors go, is a great place to be since it's very operable. It was a tumor that wasn't detected until he was 25 so his brain has been living with this for a long time. He hasn't lost any function. Although it is in his behavior center of his brain and some say it can cause him to say/do things that otherwise might be considered rude :) one of his many charms. :)

Anyway,We met with the surgeon to figure out the best attack strategy this go round. Surgery is always best because it gets the dang thing out of harms way. We've scheduled surgery for April 18th. After the surgery and our long recovery cruise we hope to go on, it seems radiation will be next as they know that it will wipe out any remaining tumor cells. Radiation is a 6 week treatment that will pretty much wipe my husband out as well, but it will be totally worth it if it means the wretched tumor won't grow back!

Don't worry about us, this has always been a part of our marriage and it's just something we fight like a bad cold or flu.

Our brain is a truly amazing organ. Sunil had a neuropsych exam after his third surgery to see how he was functioning and he was still on the high end of the charts. The joke is that he is way smarter than me even with a chunk of his brain missing!

If you are interested, I've attached a link that explains his type of
tumor, just click on the title of this blog.
